Bedrock or Java: which Minecraft edition should you pick?
When you generate a world with MapMC, the first choice you make is the edition: Bedrock or Java. They produce different files for different versions of Minecraft. Here's how to pick.
Pick Bedrock if…
You play Minecraft on Windows 10/11, Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, or mobile — or you play cross-platform with friends on those devices. This is "Bedrock Edition," the most common version today.
MapMC gives you a .mcworld file. Double-click it (or open it on your phone) and Minecraft imports the world automatically. Nothing else to install.
Pick Java if…
You play the original PC edition — the one you launch from the Minecraft Launcher on Windows, macOS, or Linux, the version that supports mods and custom servers.
MapMC gives you a world folder (delivered as a .zip). Unzip it into your saves directory and it shows up in your singleplayer list.
Still not sure?
- Bought Minecraft on a console or phone? → Bedrock.
- Use mods, Forge, Fabric, or a Spigot/Paper server? → Java.
- Play with friends across different devices? → Bedrock (it's the cross-play edition).
One thing to know: the 3D web preview MapMC offers is currently only available for Java worlds, because it's rendered with BlueMap, a Java-world renderer. Your Bedrock download is unaffected — it just opens directly in the game.
You can always generate both
Each generation is per-region, so if you want the same place in both editions, just run it twice and pick a different format each time.
